PM Abbasi's First Cabinet Sworn-in

Here is the list of cabinet members and their portfolios

ISLAMABAD: Forty-six member Federal Cabinet of Interim Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi took oath at a ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad on Friday.

The cabinet includes 28 federal ministers and 18 ministers of state.

Yesterday, a 47-member cabinet was finalised by PML-N leadership; however, due to the refusal of Daniyal Aziz to take oath, the number of cabinet members stood at 46.

Reports said Daniyal Aziz had arrived to take oath but got angry when the PML-N leader knew that he has been given the portfolio of State Minister, instead of Federal Minister.



The cabinet members and their portfolios are:

1. Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister of Finance

2. Khawaja Asif, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs

3. Ahsan Iqbal, Interior Minister

4. Khurram Dastgir, Defense Minister

5. Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, Minister for Religious Affairs

6. Saad Rafique: Minister of Railways

7. Sheikh Aftab, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs

8. Abdul Qadir Baluch, Minister of SAFRON

9. Baleegh Ur Rehman, Education and Training

10. Akram Durrani, Minister of Housing

11. Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination

12. Mushaid Ullah, Minister of Climate Change

13. Kamran Michael, Minister for Port and Shipping

14. Pervez Malik, Minister for Commerce and Trade

Others who sworn in as the federal ministers included Barjees Tahir, Parvaiz Malik, Zahid Hamid, Mumtaz Ahmed Tarar,  Salahuddin Tirmizi and Rana Tanveer.

While Ministers of States are Tariq Fazal Chaudhry , Mohsin Shah Nawaz Ranjha, Marriyum Aurangzeb,  Pir Ameer ul Hasnat, Anusha Rahman, Jam Kamal Khan, Talal Chuadhry, Barrister Usman Ibrahim, Junaid Anwaar Chaudhary, Abdul Rehman Kanjo, Awais Laghari, Ghalib Khan, Ayaz Shirazi, Chaudhry Jafar Iqbal, Dostain Khan and Saira Afzal Tarar. - Samaa

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny is to step down as leader of Fine Gael from midnight, he has announced.

He will continue as taoiseach (prime minister) until the Dail (parliament) chooses a successor.

Mr Kenny, who was elected taoiseach in 2011, tendered his resignation in March, but has been acting prime minister since then.

He told a parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday that a successor would be appointed by 2 June.

The 66-year-old had been under pressure to resign from factions within his own party dissatisfied with his leadership.

Move to bind PM to attend NA sessions defeated

ISLAMABAD: The treasury benches have shot down an opposition move to make it mandatory for the prime minister to attend a session of the lower house of parliament once a week.

The Pakistan Peoples Party, the main opposition group, proposed an amendment to the National Assembly’s rules saying the prime minister should show up in the house on the first Wednesday of every session to answer questions of lawmakers.

The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, however, defeated the amendment. “The prime minister is the chief executive of the country. He cannot be compelled to attend a session as he has to deal with many other administrative issues,” said Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmad.

Syed Khursheed Shah, the leader of the opposition who belongs to the PPP, regretted the ‘dictatorial mindset’ of the treasury. “It was a good opportunity to give powers to the prime minister to appear before the house and reply to lawmakers’ questions,” he said after the amendment was shot down.
If the prime minister shows up at least once a week in the house, it will strengthen parliamentary democracy in the country, he said. At the same time, he regretted the PPP could not introduce this amendment during its previous tenure in power. However, he quickly added that back then the prime minister used to attend parliament’s sessions regularly.
The proposed amendment sought to empower the opposition leader to have precedence over other lawmakers when taking up the questions. “The provisions relating to questions shall apply mutatis-mutandis to the prime minister’s question time,” the resolution stated.
